Stolen Kentucky Camper Located In Summertown
A camper that had been reported stolen by a resident of Kentucky in 2011 was located in the Summertown area during the weekend.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were asked to assist in the investigation after officials with the Kentucky State Police received information, indicating that the forty-foot North American Drifter, fifth wheel camper, valued at $80,000, was parked at Wheelin’ in the Country on Anderson Creek Road.
They reported that the camper, stolen in February of 2011, had been red and black with flame decals on the front end.
They forwarded the Vehicle Identification Number to deputies and said that their information indicated that a “John from Mississippi” might be in possession of the camper.
Deputies were able to positively identify the camper with the VIN number. They reported that it had been painted white and most of the decals removed.
They said that a portion of the flame decal was still visible. The camper displayed a Mississippi registration. They learned that it was registered to “John Burns” of Tishomingo, Mississippi.
Deputies noted that the camper was unoccupied at the time, but appeared to have been parked at the location for a considerable time.
At the request of the Kentucky State Police the camper was towed to the county’s impound lot pending further investigation, to be collected at a later date by Kentucky authorities or the current owner.
Around 6:15 that evening deputies received information indicating that Burns had returned to Wheelin’ in the Country, making inquiries as to the whereabouts of his camper. They spoke with Burns by telephone.
They report he would give no information and said he would not come to the sheriff’s department because he was, “100 miles away.” They instructed Burns that he should contact the Kentucky State Police for further information.
